The ancient monastery Certosa di Padula is the largest charterhouse in Italy, part of the Unesco World Heritage site that includes Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park with the archeological sites of Paestum and Velia in the southern Italian region of Campania.

This Carthusian monastery was founded by Tommaso di San Severino in 1306, and dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Comprising three cloisters, a garden, a courtyard and a church, it is one of the most sumptuous Baroque monumental complexes in southern Italy (its Baroque form is actually the result of the transformations carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries), and well worth a visit when in the Cilento area.

It is the first charterhouse to have been erected in Campania. Its structure, as for all Carthusian monasteries in Italy, recalls the gridiron upon which Saint Lawrence was burnt alive.

The Certosa di Padula has about 350 rooms and, including the gardens, it develops over an area of 51,500 square meters, of which 15,000 are occupied by the Chiostro Grande, the largest cloister in the world.

The Carthusian order called for a clear distinction between contemplation and work, and this is reflected in the layout of the spaces: the tranquil cloisters, the library with its fine Vietri ceramic tiled floor, the chapels decorated with inlaid marble works were used for prayer and meditation; the large kitchen, the wine cellars, the olive oil mill, the laundries, and the external agricultural fields were used for daily activities carried out for the livelihood of the monks and included trade with the outside world.

Today, the Certosa di Padula is home to the Archaeological Museum of Lucanian Antiquities, which houses a collection of finds discovered during archeological excavations in the necropolis of nearby Sala Consilina and Padula.

For its beauty, the Certosa di Padula has been used numerous times as a movie set. Among the films shot here are Francesco Rosi's Once Upon a Time (1967), starring Sophia Loren and Omar Sharif, set in the era of Spanish domination.
