Eataly: Born in Piedmont, Conquering the World

It is perhaps no coincidence that upscale Italian food market chain Eataly had its start in the same region where the Slow Food movement began: Piedmont, in north-western Italy.
After all, Eataly shares much of its philosophy with the organization founded in Alba in 1989: the focus is on high-quality food and drink, produced by local artisans using sustainable practices; emphasis is placed on products that are in season, come from close by and are protected by Slow Food.
Eataly’s founder himself, Oscar Farinetti, a native of Alba, has long been a fan of Slow Food, which has its headquarters right in nearby Bra; the area is famous for its wines, truffles and cheeses. And Eataly’s headquarters, now that the company has expanded worldwide, have remained close by, in Monticello d’Alba, province of Cuneo.
The first Eataly opened in Turin in 2007, when Farinetti converted a closed vermouth factory into an Italian food market comprising a number of restaurants, specialized food and beverage counters (e.g. bread, cheese, cold cuts, wine, etc.) and kitchen retail items.
In just a few years, Eataly has expanded to include several locations in Italy and around the world. Among the most famous are the popular New York City location in the Flatiron District (recently joined by a Downtown location), and Eataly Chicago, co-owned by Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich; at 63,000-square-foot, it is the largest Eataly in the USA.
Non è forse un caso che Eataly, la catena specializzata nella vendita di prodotti alimentari italiani di alta qualità, sia nata nella stessa regione in cui ha avuto inizio il movimento Slow Food: il Piemonte, nel nord-ovest d'Italia.
Dopo tutto, Eataly condivide buona parte della sua filosofia con l'organizzazione fondata ad Alba nel 1989: l’attenzione è su cibo e bevande di alta qualità, prodotti da artigiani locali che impiegano pratiche sostenibili; particolare risalto è dato ai prodotti stagionali, provenienti da vicino e protetti da Slow Food.
Lo stesso fondatore di Eataly, Oscar Farinetti, originario di Alba, è da tempo un fan di Slow Food, che ha sede nella vicina Bra; la zona è famosa per i suoi vini, tartufi e formaggi. E la sede di Eataly, ora che l'azienda si è ingrandita in tutto il mondo, è rimasta lì vicino, a Monticello d'Alba, provincia di Cuneo.
Il primo Eataly aprì a Torino nel 2007, quando Farinetti trasformò una vecchia fabbrica di vermouth in un supermercato con ristoranti, banchi alimentari specializzati (ad esempio pane, formaggio, salumi, vino, ecc.) e oggetti per la cucina.
Nel giro di pochi anni, Eataly si è ingrandita fino a includere diverse sedi in Italia e in tutto il mondo. Tra le sedi più famose ci sono quella di New York, nel quartiere Flatiron (a cui si è recentemente aggiunta una nuova location downtown), e Eataly Chicago, in co-proprietà con Mario Batali e Joe Bastianich; si estende su una superficie di 5,852 metri quadrati ed è il più grande Eataly negli Stati Uniti.
