If you are looking for ideas to plan your winter vacation in the Italian mountains, consider Sestriere. This alpine village in Piedmont’s Susa Valley, a mere 17 km from the French border, stands at 2,035 meters above sea level and is completed surrounded by mountains, hosting one of the biggest ski resorts in Italy.

Along with a number of nearby villages, Sestriere forms the Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski area, which encompasses 200 pistes between Italy and France for a total of 400 km of skiable runs, including one that is lit for night skiing. The area is renowned for the quality of the ski schools as well.

While the permanent population of Sestriere is 800 people, that number swells to 20,000 during the winter season. The ski resorts at Sestriere were built in the 1930s by FIAT founder Giovanni Agnelli, who was born in nearby Turin, and was intent on making it the ‘capital of skiing’.

Sestriere was the main venue during the 2006 Winter Olympics, when it hosted all the men's alpine skiing competitions; it was also site of one of the three Olympic villages. In addition, it regularly hosts FIS Alpine Ski World Cup events.

Sestriere is also a famous starting or arrival point in the famous Tour de France and Giro d'Italia cycling races.

You can reach Sestriere by car or train and bus. Trains from Turin arrive at the station of Oulx in the Susa Valley, which is then connected to Sestriere by bus.
