Sicily Prepares for Flower Festival

| Mon, 05/09/2011 - 07:22

As warm weather returns in Mid-May, Sicily prepares a floral celebration.

Each year, one of the most colorful festivals in the world takes place on the streets of Noto. For two and a half days, Via Nicolaci is taken over by petals.

Local and foreign artists descend upon the streets to create intricate flower mosaics. Working all day Friday, the pavement becomes a montage of petals, stems and leaves, carefully applied to produce a beautiful concord of colors.

The carpet of flowers leads the way to other celebrations, including musicians and dancers parading through the Baroque streets.

The floral mosaic remains in place for Saturday and Sunday, but the children of Noto are given free reign on Monday to run through the fleeting frescoes.

Infiorata will take place from 13-15 May 2011. For more information and an event schedule, visit infiorata.info.
