Former Milan prefect Bruno Ferrante will be the center-left's candidate for mayor of that city after winning a primary vote at the weekend.

Ferrante clinched over 67% of the vote compared to 23% collected by Nobel laureate Dario Fo, 5.8% won by Milly Moratti and 3.3% won by Davide Corritore. Over 80,000 center-left supporters took part in the primary down from the 100,000 who cast ballots in the autumn to choose Romano Prodi as their candidate for premier in the upcoming general elections.

Ferrante has the support of the Democratic Left, the centrist Daisy Party, the Social Democrats and some of the greens.

He is set to run against Education Minister Letizia Moratti in this spring's vote. She was handpicked as the center-right's candidate by Premier Silvio Berlusconi.
