Italian Court Divorces Couple After Sex Change Operation

The court in Bologna has dissolved a marriage after hearing a very unique case. The court approved the divorce without the consent of either spouse.

While the couple wishes to remain married, a problem arose when the husband, Alessandro, became Alessandra in 2009. After undergoing an operation, Alessandra went to the registrar to officially change her name.

The registry clerk was unsure as to whether or not Alessandra could legally declare that she was married to another female on her official identity card.

The case was deferred to the court of appeals, where a judge in Modena dissolved the legally recognized relationship.

The couple plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.
