Mount Vesuvius is representing Italy’s beautiful natural environment as a candidate to become one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

Vesuvius is ranked among 27 other finalists, including the Grand Canyon, the Galapagos Islands, the Red Sea and the Amazon Rain Forest, in a contest to identify environmental marvels around the globe.

While the final candidates have already been selected, it is up to the people to decide which environmental landmarks will be graced with the title and officials in Naples are launching a campaign to rally Italians around the world to vote for Vesuvius.

Naples coordinators are urging those in Campania, Italy and beyond to “vote for Vesuvius: vote for Italy”.

Luigi Cesaro, the president of the province of Naples, said that “proper recognition of the natural value of Vesuvius” would “above all serve to deepen the disfigured image of Naples in the world".

Voting will take place until November 11, 2011 and anyone can cast their online ballot at New7Wonders.com.
