Sicily Wins DOC Wine Status

After years of proposals and trials, Sicily has been awarded its own designation of origin for wines made in the region.

The National Wine Committee approved Sicily DOC late last week in Rome. DOC signifies a guarantee of quality, thus paving the way for the elevation of Sicilian wines around the world.

DOC wine is “Vino a Denominazione di Origine Controllata”, which is a classification that was first developed in the 1960s. The DOC denomination is meant to distinguish wine that is produced in certain specific regions, according to explicit rules defining and preserving the wine-making traditions of the region.

Sicilian winemakers plan on treating the DOC denomination as a springboard rather than an endpoint success, driving the quality of their wines even higher in the coming years.
