A tale of two weddings

An 87-year-old woman from Massarosa [Lucca, Tuscany] has been prevented from marrying her 49-year-old fiancé today by the Public Prosecutor of Lucca. Ines Orsolini, a former midwife, and Daniele Bernardi, described by ANSA as an electronics enthusiast, have been the subject of gossip in the area since the marriage banns were published, for signora Orsolini is the owner of several properties and is rumoured to be wealthy.

When signora Orsolini’s niece, Lian Orsolini, heard about the marriage plans she immediately flew to Italy from the United States and launched a legal challenge to the marriage on the grounds of her aunt’s mental health. Lian Orsolini is the daughter of Ines Orsolini’s brother who emigrated to the United States.

She is a university professor and was a member of President Obama’s Commission on Health Reform, reports La Nazione di Viareggio.

The marriage ceremony has been halted pending assessments of signora Orsolini’s mental ability to make decisions. The signora is said to be a good-looking woman despite her age and elderly people in Massarosa have told La Nazione di Viareggio that she turned down several suitors in her youth.

In a happier wedding story, “American Pie” star Mena Suvari [31] has married her fiancé Simone Sestito [25] in a private ceremony in a church in the Vatican City. The couple, who met at the Toronto Film Festival in 2007, became engaged in 2008. They chose Italy for their wedding ceremony as many of Mr Sestito’s relatives live there. A guest told People Magazine that the bride looked “breathtaking”. This is Miss Suvari’s second marriage. Simone Sestito is an Italian-Canadian concert producer.

Do you think signora Orsolini should be allowed to marry Daniele Bernardi?
