The tradition of performing classic Greek plays in the amazing atmosphere of Syracuse's Greek theatre which started in 1914, continues this year with special events to celebrate the 100th edition of the festival. In ancient times, Siracusa was one of the most important cities in the Greek world and had one of the most impressive theatres of the time. With 59 rows accommodating up to 15,000 spectators, its cavea was one of the largest ever built.
Every year in May and June, the National Institute of Ancient drama, INDA, organises these wonderful plays attracting thousands of Italians and tourists from all over the world. In an incredibly evocative atmosphere, the plays start at sunset between 6.45 pm and 7.00pm.
The 2014 season, the 50th Cycle of Classical Plays, includes Agamemnon and PChoephori/Eumenides by Aeschylus and Aristophanes’ comedy The Wasps, all featuring the amazing scenic and costume designs by Arnaldo Pomodoro.
