Italian actress Claudia Cardinale will guest host the Venezia Classici (Venice Classics) section of the Venice International Film Festival.

The Venice Classics section is devoted to restored films and documentaries about cinema. Cardinale will attend the screening of 1965’s ‘Vaghe stelle dell’Orsa’ (Sandra (Of a Thousand Delights)) by Luchino Visconti, which she starred in and which won the Golden Lion at the 30th Venice International Film Festival. Restored by Sony Pictures Entertainment, the film is one of the four classic movies restored this year thanks to copies conserved at the Historic Archives of the Contemporary Arts (ASAC) of the Biennale di Venezia. The ASAC has also provided the copies of ‘Le 15 d’Août’ (The 15th of August, 1973) by Chantal Akerman, a restoration made possible by the Biennale in collaboration with Cinematek in Brussels.

‘Sjecaš li se Dolly Bell’ (Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, 1981) by Emir Kusturica restored by the Sarajevo Film Centre in collaboration with the Biennale. ‘Little Fugitive’ (1953) by Ray Ashley, Morris Engel and Ruth Orkin, restored by Ripley’s Film with the Orkin and Engel Film and Photo Archive in collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin, La Biennale and Carlotta Films. The ‘Sorcerer’ (1977), by the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement William Friedkin, will open Venice Classics on 29 August. It was restored for the occasion by Warner Bros.

Among other classic movies to screen are Francesco Rosi’s ‘Le mani sulla città’ (Hands Over the City, 1963), Roberto Rossellini’s ‘Paisà’ (Paisan, 1946), Franco Brusati’s ‘Pane e cioccolata’ (Bread and Chocolate, 1973), Damiano Damiani’s ‘Quién sabe?’ (A Bullet for the General, 1966) and Elio Petri’s ‘La proprietà non è più un furto’ (Property Is No Longer a Theft, 1973).

The 70th Venice International Film Festival runs from 28 August to 7 September 2013. ‘Gravity’ starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and directed by ‘Children of Men’ director Alfonso Cuarón, will be the opening film (Out of Competition). Do not miss our interview with Claudia Cardinale.
