The official mascot of Expo 2015 was sketched by Disney Italia and represents a face made of 11 types of food joined together, resembling a painting by Arcimboldo, the Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made of fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books.

The 11 food elements come from around the world and are intended to represent the expo’s theme, “Feeding the planet, energy for life;” they are garlic, watermelon, orange, banana, fig, blue corn, mango, apple, pomegranate, pear and radish.

The mascot was recently presented in Milan, where the Expo will be held, in front of a children’s audience. Children are called to decide on the names of the mascot as well as the different characters the food items have been made into by taking part in an online contest.

Michelangelo's David will be the symbol of Italy at the Expo, while Illy Caffè is the official partner.
