How to Say: Seasons and Weather

Spring is finally here and with the recent change of season, we thought we’d devote our weekly ‘How to Say’ post to learning words and expressions related to seasons and the weather. After all, talking about "il tempo" -the weather- is an easy conversation starter and this way you can practice your Italian with the locals!

The four seasons – stagioni – are:

Primavera – spring

Estate – summer

Autunno – fall or autumn

Inverno – winter

If you want talk about the weather in a particular season, use "in" before the season, i.e., "in estate fa caldo" (it's hot in the summer), “in inverno fa freddo” (it's cold in the winter).  

Below find some expressions to describe the weather – il tempo.

Che tempo fa oggi? Or Com’è il tempo oggi?  What's the weather like today?

E’ bello / Fa bel tempo - It's nice

E’ brutto / Fa brutto tempo - It's bad

C'è il sole - It's sunny

C’è vento or E’ ventoso – It’s windy

E’ nuvoloso - It's cloudy

C’è nebbia – it’s foggy

Piove – It’s raining

Grandina - It's hailing

Nevica – It’s snowy

E’ umido – it’s humid

Fa freddo - It's cold, or Fa un gran freddo! It’s really cold

Fa un freddo gelido – it’s freezing

Fa caldo - It's hot, or Fa troppo caldo! It’s too hot

Fa fresco - It's cool

E’ variabile – It’s changeable
