The Real Sherlock Holmes Is Half Italian

The real Sherlock Holmes is half Italian, apparently.

According to biographer Angela Buckley, who wrote a book about “The Real Sherlock Holmes,” Jerome Caminada, the most brilliant policeman in 19th century Britain, who may have inspired author Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character, was the son of an Irish mother and Italian father.

The biography of Caminada, out this month, reveals a series of similarities between him and the fictional character. Born in poverty in Manchester, Caminada rose to the high rank of Superintendent in the criminal investigation department of the Manchester police force thanks to his wits, talent, astute logical reasoning and grasp of forensic science. He was also known for his eccentric disguises.

Caminada was dubbed “the Garibaldi of Detectives”.
