Siena Cathedral Opens Gateway to Heaven

| Thu, 03/06/2014 - 23:00

After extensive renovation, the Cathedral of Siena is re-opening its “Gateway to Heaven” (Porta del cielo) at the very summit of the church - hence the name.

Visitors will be able to enter a series of rooms and walkways where no one has ever entered, except for the great architects who, starting in 1215 and through the centuries, have worked on the magnificent building that is the Duomo today.

From high above, visitors will be able to admire the medieval and Renaissance mosaics that cover the marble floor, as well as get closer to the building's ornate vaulted ceiling, painted blue with gold stars.

A new entrance ticket includes a guided tour of the Gate of Heaven and access to all the museums of the Cathedral complex. Tours must be booked in advance.
