Underground Umbria Project Launched

Umbria has launched a project, "Umbria Underground", to promote the many underground sites the region boasts, most of which are unknown to visitors.

Ancient Roman cisterns, catacombs, medieval aqueducts, Renaissance towers, Etruscan tombs, for a total of 40 monuments and 16 hypogea, will become part of a series of tourist itineraries bringing archeology and architecture to center stage.

In the ancient past, Umbria was a crossroad of civilizations because of its central position in Italy and these civilizations have left their mark, which is not always so manifest, especially if hidden underground.

The project is still a work in progress: a website will be updated as the project expands to include itineraries based on specific themes, photographs and all necessary information to plan a trip to Umbria, with a focus on food and artisanal traditions as well.

Underground sites featured in the project include Amelia, Assisi, Castel Viscardo, Cesi, Città della Pieve, Città di Castello, Gubbio, Massa Martana, Narni, Norcia, Orvieto, Panicale, Perugia, Spoleto, Terni and Todi.
