Amici di Italy Magazine,
During the past 150 years, over 30 million people have left Italy, setting out to make their fortunes overseas. Recently, official figures reveal that emigration from Italy is on the rise again with a 30% increase in 2012.
We dedicated this week to all of those who left or are leaving this country, the true ambassadors of Italian culture in the world.
The hub of the early 19th century migration was the port of Genoa, where departing Italian families set out for new world destinations. The Centro Internazionale Studi Emigrazione Italiana (CISEI, International Centre of Italian Emigration Studies) based in Genoa, has now compiled a comprehensive catalogue of emigration documents and recreated passengers' embarkation lists from the port of Genoa. We looked at their research explaining that it is now possible to check their database on-line.
Few weeks ago, CISEI also revealed data regarding Pope Francis' Father's Journey to Argentina in 1929. Carol King reported on how Mario Bergoglio was one of many Italians who immigrated to the New World. He was just 21-years-old when he boarded the 'Giulio Cesare' ship in Genoa to make the transatlantic crossing to Buenos Aires, arriving on 15 February 1929.
Finally, Gino De Blasio explores the relationship between Italians, food and custom officers. Don't we all want to carry some Italian salami or cheese in our suitcase when leaving Italy? This is the neverending story of the "Love Affair" between Italians, food and Customs.
And thanking you for the follow, we say Grazie Mille and offer some tips to help you say thanks to your Italian friends!
This year we created a 2013 Italy Magazine desktop wallpaper calendar. We hope you liked the idea and downloaded the first months. It is now possible to download the April page dedicated to Spring.
A presto!
