Amici di Italy Magazine,
One of Italy's most celebrated holidays is the Festa della Liberazione, or Liberation Day, on the 25th of April. The day marks the liberation of the country by Allied troops in World War II and is celebrated throughout the peninsula with parades, concerts, demonstrations, speeches, and more.
We marked this holiday with three features dedicated to the Liberation Day.
Carol King reported on Le Frecce Tricolori, the flamboyant aerobatic antics of Italy's most skilled pilots who perform often during the 25th of April parades.
We also celebrated one of Italy's Treasures: Nobel Prize Winner Rita Levi Montalcini who passed away last December. Born in Turin to a Sephardic Jewish family, she graduated from the Turin Medical School in 1936 - just in time to be barred from her professional work by the Mussolini government. She was a Life Senator, Nobel Laureate and Cavaliere di Gran Croce and would have turned 104 on the 22nd of April this year!
Finally, our dual language article describes a magnificent tall ship of the Marina Militare, named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci.
At the moment, this 82 years old training ship is going through a restyling that will guarantee another 30 years of life, and turn it into an example of eco-friendly, sustainable tall-ship.
You can try reading the Italian version of the article first then check with the English one.
This year we created a 2013 Italy Magazine desktop wallpaper calendar. We hope you liked the idea and downloaded the first months. It is now possible to download the May page.
A presto!
