Amici di Italy Magazine,
Many Italian towns and villages hold fascinating re-enactments of the country's Medieval past. Some are just parades commemorating historic events, others take you fully back to life in the Middle Ages with ancient markets, tournaments and games like Palios, Giostras or Balestras. As the most famous one, the Palio di Siena, is approaching ( 16th of August), we explained the differences between these three Medieval games and suggested some of the best events to attend if you are as obsessed about Italian Medieval pageants as we are.
Another Italian traditional game with ancient roots is "Bocce", Italian bowling, which was a favourite of Roman soldiers and continues to be played to this day, especially in Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, known as the Red Heart of Italy. Daemienne Sheehan revealed how he discovered a passion for Bocce when he visited the area.
Early this year, we talked about the exhibition of masterpieces of ancient art from Sicily mounted by the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, California. Highlights of the exhibition include the fifth-century BC Auriga (charioteer) of Mozia marble sculpture. This week, Diana Coode took us to the source and explored one of Sicily's hidden gems, the tiny island of Mozia, its history and its incredible museum.
This year we created a 2013 Italy Magazine desktop wallpaper calendar. We hope you liked the idea and downloaded the first months. It is now possible to download the August page.
A presto!
