For most people outside of Italy the 15th of August probably doesn't mean anything in particular. For most Italians, however, this is the day when we celebrate summer at its most glorious time, a day when families and friends get together for countryside walks, relaxing picnics or parties on the beach followed by fireworks by the sea at night. As this is also the day when the Catholic Church commemorates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many towns also have religious procession and traditions linked to this date. As always with Italians, food is an important component of the celebration. From her home in Cambridge, Francesca Re Manning, shared her Ferragosto's memories with us and explained some of the traditional food prepared for this National Festa.
And there is no true Italian Summer Festa without gelato. But how can you choose when standing in front of dozens of interesting flavours?
