Amici di Italy Magazine,
This week we explored some "very Italian" habits.
Le Repubbliche Marinare, the maritime republics, were a number of city-states which flourished in Italy in the Middle Ages, the best known are Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice. These states competed with each other both militarily and commercially, and on the institutional level had formed autonomous Republican governments, which were an expression of the merchant class and constituted the backbone of their power.
The history of the maritime republics intertwines both with the launch of European expansion to the East and with the origins of modern capitalism as a mercantile and financial system. Le repubbliche left behind a wealth of cultural heritage that makes these cities quite unique even today and ranks them among the top destinations to visit when coming to Italy. This week we dedicated our features to Genova "La Superba" and to Pisa suggesting a day tripper to the city of the most famous Italian tower.
Finally, on the 15th of August, we celebrated with a special dual language feature talking about Il Ferragosto. Find out how this holiday can change the life of a small village while testing your Italian language skills.
A presto!
