Amici di Italy Magazine,
On the 21st of June spring will be officially over and summertime heat will make a roaring return to the peninsula as a blast of hot, humid air from Africa could produce the country's first true heat wave of the year. Considering the bad weather many Italian Northern and Central regions have experienced until few weeks ago, this heat wave seems definitely welcome.
So most Italians are now ready for a full immersion into the "Gelati" season.
Carol King interviewed Italian film director Ivano Fachin about his documentary 'Gelati e Granite' about the life of a Sicilian 83-year-old ice-cream seller Don Giugginu.
The van and its driver are a familiar sight in the towns around Southeastern Sicily, as he's served generations of locals. His lemon and strawberry granitas, and almond, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio and lemon gelati are typical of the island.
And even our Inspired Stays series was dedicated to Sicily this week, as we talked about Atelier Sul Mare in Castel di Tusa. Founded by Antonio Presti, this hotel is a piece of installation art in its own right, as well as one of the most unusual hotels on the island with more than 20 rooms designed by famous contemporary artists. The creativity, however, is not confined to within the hotel walls. You can also visit Fiumara d'Arte, or torrent of art, a group of nine contemporary sculptures which have been fashioned by various artists and placed within the hinterland of Castel di Tusa.
And if you are inspired to book your next holiday in Italy, check out our new website feature called Deals where you can find special deals for Italy Magazine readers.
Finally, on the 500th anniversary of the composition of Niccolò Machiavelli's famous book 'Il Principe', we looked at the influence of the handbook to political control. Do not miss the top 5 quotes from the book we chose for you.
This year we created a 2013 Italy Magazine desktop wallpaper calendar. We hope you liked the idea and downloaded the first months. It is now possible to download the June page.
A presto!
