Amici di Italy Magazine,
The Holy Week in Italy is rich of traditional processions and ancient rituals taking place in various towns and cities across the country. Both devotees and tourists can attend the events organized by the many confraternities and church groups to reenact the via crucis or the many processions dedicated to the passion of Christ.
On Easter Sunday, austerity gives way to the celebrations of the Resurrection. Applauding, throwing flowers and playing traditional instruments accompany the statue of the risen Christ meeting with that of the Madonna. After the procession, people wish each other "Buona Pasqua" (Happy Easter) and go back home to share a traditional meal with the rest of the family.
And cheese is at the centre of many Easter traditional recipes both savoury and sweet. A great reason not to miss our articles on Italy Top 10 Cheeses and on its best Easter cakes and pies, whose main common ingredient is actually "ricotta".
Finally, thinking about the name "Francesco" chosen by the New Pope and to wish a peaceful Easter to you all, Anne Harrison took us to Assisi, San Francesco's city in Umbria. She explains how from the first sighting of the Basilica when arriving in the valley far below, the words of St Francis simply come to life: pax et bonum, peace and goodwill.
This year we created a 2013 Italy Magazine desktop wallpaper calendar. We hope you liked the idea and downloaded the first months. It is now possible to download the April page dedicated to Spring.
A presto!
