Throughout Italy, where grapes are grown almost everywhere, from the small Mediterranean island of Pantelleria to the Alps, this is the heady time of the year: la vendemmia. The grape harvest is the culmination of a year's labour in the field and its success or failure depends also on the arbitrary fortunes of Mother Nature. This year, Italian vintners seem satisfied with the results as production has increased 8% from 2012 and they predict that the 2013 wine will be of good quality. To celebrate the good news, we focused on two interesting wines produced in the North Western area of Italy: Sciacchetrà and Moscato D'Asti.
Sharon Boeckle, co-director with Krista Lee Weller of the documentary film "Vendemmia", which focuses on the struggle for sustainable tourism in the Cinque Terre, explored the thousand-year old tradition behind the local Sciacchetrà wine in Liguria.
Wine expert Manuel Magnani explained the distinctive features of Moscato D'Asti, one of Italy's most popular white wines,produced in the country's northwest Piedmont region. Moscato Bianco is now in strong demand all over the world as the perfect casual and after-dinner Italian drink.
