Good evening,I am driving down to the Cote D'Azur in June and having never been to Italy before decided to drive on around to Florence after the stay in Cannes is finished. I have booked a hotel for 3 nights, it is just on the outside edge the no cars zone. I have spoken to a few colleagues who are Italian, and they say I would be mad to drive in Italy as the roads are crazy and the drivers don't care. Is this true? I intend on sticking to main roads and may venture out to go to Pisa for a day trip. I don't intend driving into the city centre of Florence as our hotel is only 25 minutes walk from the Ponte Vecchio. Any hints and tips from anybody who lives there or has driven through there before?

We have not driven around Florence itself, but have done Pisa to Siena a few times using the FI-PI-LI (road). Okay the driving is something to see, but if you ake sure you know where you are going and take it easy its not quite as bad as it's made out. Saying that we avoided Florence and in particular the autostrada from there to Siena. We hve been by bus into Florence a few times whilst passing through (not our favourite place) and would not want to be driving too close at any time. Use google street view to do a vitrual drive to get an idea of the busy areas/exits.I should have added, doing a seach for Florence to Pisa and FI-PI-LI will come up with more information.
