It is a good idea in the off-season...not from now until December. A one lane curvy road each way with full size buses, tourists and locals clogging the route.I recommend taking one of the ferries, the view is much more spectacular and relaxing.

There are ferries which regularly travel from Naples to Sorrento, Amalfi, and Capri. It's a great way to see the coastline. Also, if you are looking for something more romantic, here's some information about renting a car and driver. One of my friends just used this service two weeks ago from Naples to Positano and back. He highly recommends it.Cost was $100 and the driver was great. It's a small business owned by Salvatore and his family [Salvatore: +39 3385451697 / Giovanna: +39 3333425902].La Mammola Car Service Transfer & Excursions [http://www.xploreamalficoast.it/sito/en/aboutus]http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g194863-d2181539-Reviews-La_Mammola_Car_Service_Transfer_Excursions-Positano_Amalfi_Coast_Campania.htmlThis following method of travel is more complicated, but quite interesting if you want to add some adventure to your travels. There is a train to Sorrento from Naples. Circumvesuviana Trains run frequently between Napoli Centrale (Naples main train station) and Sorrento on the Amalfi Peninsula. Circumvesuviana is a private train company. When you get to the Sorrento station there is a bus just outside the entrance which goes along the Almafi Coast to the town of Amalfi, with stops along the way.To get to the Circumvesuviana Garibaldi Station in the Naples train station (Napoli Centrale), go downstairs. Follow the signs! Tickets for these trains (inexpensive) must be bought at a Circumvesuviana station. There are also other stops for this train line in Naples.Train time to Sorrento is one hour, seven minutes. Trains run every half hour (currently leaving Naples at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour starting at 5:10AM with last train at 22:43 and from Sorrento starting at 5:37AM from Sorrento with the last train at 22:25). There may be fewer trains on Sundays or holidays.Circumvesuviana trains also go to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius. For Pompeii, get off at Pompeii Scavi stop, 36 minutes from Naples. BE SURE YOU GET OFF AT THE POMPEII SCAVI (excavation) STOP! Trains for Herculaneum (Ercalano) and Mount Vesuvius depart several times an hour (don't take the Sorrento line). For the Ercalano archaeological site, get off at Ercalano Scavi, 17 minutes from Naples. To get to Mount Vesuvius, get off the train at Ercolano station where you can catch a Compagnia Trasporti Vesuviani bus outside the station. Check the Circumvesuviana web site for current schedules. Private tours to Mt. Vesuvius also leave from the Pompeii Scavi train stop.

Yes, by all means drive the coast road. If I'd listened to the nay-Sayers we would have missed a highlight of our two weeks on the coast. We rented a couple of scooters in Sorrento and drove the road from there to Naples and down to Amalfi several times. Pay attention, watch the weather and use common sense. Have a blast. While you're there on the coast, if you're in reasonable physical condition try going to Positano then up to Nochello for a hike along the Path of God. The views are spectacularly worth the effort!!

To really see the most beautiful coastline in the world...let someone else do the driving! From Sorento all the way to Salerno, you can take a bus or take the Metro del Mare or better still, a combination of both. The Circumvesuviana train is a most interesting way to get to Sorento from Naples and probably gives the best views. From there on around the coast you would be crazy to drive as frequent  walls obscure the view from occupants of cars, and drivers dare not take their eyes off the road. If you are seated up high in a bus you can see everything and it's a slow journey so you can take it all in. Metro del Mare is an alternative and equally beautiful way to see the coastline.  I've done this coastline a few times and really do advise that you don't use a car.

We were there last September. Based in suburb of Naples on the circumversuvia line. Traffic and roads in area are, well, well you'll be praying a lot! Not many cars in Naples are pristine condition. My advice, get a train from Naples to sorrento or Salerno   The coast is full of ferries, busses, taxis etc. the more of you the cheaper. We got train from Nola to Salerno, boat to Almafi, then bus back to Salerno. Great day, great views and not hard on pocket . Good luck

Buon giorno, What I did was take the local buses from Sorrento going down south along the famous Amalfi coast. That in itself is breathtaking enough, let alone driving in an own or rented vehicle. It's best to start the trip in the morning.  I do not think it a wise idea to drive this route in a private car, since it is quite steep and many curves which ask for 150% attention of the driver, plus oncoming traffic can be quite frightening since it is seen only at the last minute or so. Be careful if you can't help but do it your way.MAri
