Visiting Italy is a dream I have had for a long time.  I am interested in hearing suggestion for the best way to experience Italy for the 1st time.  My husband and I have talked about what would be the best way, escoted tours, unescorted tours or goin it on our own, any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Christina, it is completely up to you, which kind of travel you are accustomed to and enjoy. Have you ever driven in a foreign country? Are you comfortable touring by train and bus, going by your own schedule? I'd not, you may want to choose a tour package that appeals to you. You could also arrange a package tour, then stay on, on your own for a period of time.

Hello. In Italy it is not necessary to go on an escorted tour. Usually these tours move from city to city at a fast pace and leave you with little free time to really experience and enjoy the cities. Although Italy is a small country, each region has its own distinct character, history, culture and cuisine. In my opinion you can easily arrange your own travel arrangements from city to city, the Italian railway can take you to the most important cities easily. If you want an personalized tour "off-the beaten path" I would suggest you hire a local tour guide who can not only show you the main attractions, but also give you an insider's point of view. Be sure to hire an officially-licensed guide. Hope this helps.

Loredana,Your comment does help.  I would not want to get caught up in all of the "touristy" things but I would like to see the iconic Italian sites.  Thanks again for your comments.

No problem. I have lead groups of tourists from cruise ships around Tuscany and from what they have told me it seems like they really don't get a taste of the "true Italy". Even during the short time I have with them I can only show them the "touristy" aspects. Buon viaggio!

I suggest you fly into Rome and then travel by train (it's easy) to one or more cities from there, then back to Rome for departure. Seeing the countryside by train is lovely and Rome is easy city to traverse by taxis. Pick a city or two and try to spend at least 2 days in each spot to get full experience.

Hi ! I suggest stay in Tuscany for the location in centre of Italy, then by train or motor-way you can travel ...Venice, Milan , Rome , Siena......
If you need some thing..this my e.mail
bye!
