Place to visit
Famed for its world-class vineyards, medieval hilltop towns and the elusive white and black truffles, the Monferrato region is fast becoming the go-to region for food and wine tourism in this lush corner of Italy. Its cultural landscape and wine heritage also gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2014, helping to protect and celebrate this unique region.
The vineyard landscapes of the Monferrato hills are created from these centuries of tradition and offer unique panoramas of carefully cultivated hillsides where historic castles, hilltop villages, churches and farms punctuate these views from all angles with their distinctive silhouettes.
Piemonte and the Monferrato region is dotted with dozens of ancient hilltop towns perfect for exploring. The leading wine centres of Nizza Monferrato, Asti, Alba and Barolo are all within easy reach and the Almaranto team can arrange bespoke tours and tastings at any of the many world-class wineries in the area.
For food lovers, local markets and independent shops are there to discover and our team will guide you on market dates and the hidden gems to seek out during your visit. As the home of the Slow Food Movement, its influence in dishes and customs in homes and restaurants across the Monferrato region is evident and celebrated. The Piemonte region also boasts more than 40 Michelin-starred restaurants, cementing its place as the capital of Italian food.
For lovers of flea markets and antiques, the region hosts many weekly markets. The closest to Almaranto is held on the third Sunday of every month at nearby Nizza Monferrato just 5 minutes from the hotel.
For shoppers, there are the growing number of "outlet malls” becoming a magnet for anyone seeking designer Italian brands at a discount, but for a more sedate and enriching shopping experience, Italy’s former capital of Turin (Torino) is 90 minutes by car and a true gem of a city. Easy city-centre parking, excellent restaurants and museums make this a great day trip.
And finally, with dozens of small towns and hamlets all fiercely proud of their traditions and history, the Piemontese never miss an opportunity to celebrate. From April to October events are held almost weekly across the region, where you’ll find everything from the traditional to the crazy. Our team can advise you of what is happening during you planned dates.
