We're thinking of visiting the Frassassi caves when we're over for half term soon. Has anyone on here been? I have heard they are very impressive. We'd be driving up from near Amandola, can anyone advise whether its faster to head up the coast and then inland from Ancona or go across country from that area? And any recommendations for a place for lunch in that area? Thanks for any advice. Am.

AmarettoThe caves are very good indeed , with guided tours in English. But I see you are coming in the school holidays and so you may be interested in seeing if they still do guided tours in all the waterproof gear, safety helmets etc to the parts of the cave system the general public cannot enter. My kids did it when they were teenagers and loved it. The website should have all the details and also how you book the adventure tour. As to the journey, why not enjoy the scenery on the way up and use the autostrada on the way back.  Enjoy.

We went there last August, it was breathtaking, I have never seen anything like it. The story of how it was discovered was fascinating, how some walkers found a hole in the ground and came back with a rope, and plunged down into this incredible underground world. The creamy colours of the stalactites and stalacmites against the lighting make it a seem a real wonderland. You get bussed up to it from a car park fully of tacky stalls, and then the tour takes about an hour. Have fun!

Thanks, that all sounds good, I checked out the adventure tours and I think they are nearly 4 hrs which is a bit long underground for me. The round trip's got to be the way to go, much nicer than there and back journeys I think. Looks like its only about 15 mins longer to come back across country to our place so thats fine.Cheers, looking forward to it now.. Am.
