Ryanair - new rip off

05/20/2010 - 04:28

Recently we went to check in a bag at the counter at Stansted and the girl there said it would cost £35 but we could do it on line for £15... so off to the Radisson and checked it in only to find that there was an FX charge or something so the £15 became £41.... damn - caught again. Then to rub it in the queue to check the bag in the next morning was huge - a good hour of standing from back to front.. even saw someone miss a plane and be told to go and buy a ticket for the next one. So if you ever feel you have to check a bag in again get to that queue 2.5 hrs early... it's not a queue for a specific flight so it will always be there.

I try and fly easyjet they are a bit better. And alitalia have special deals sometimes as well.  Every time we sit on a ryanair  plane my wife looks at me and says we promised we wouldn't do this and here we are again.....

..........I have flown Ryan several  times and have only ever had really good experiences. Admittedly I never check any luggage and always check in online. And they have the most modern fleet of all airlines, which is nice. The queue system used to be part of the Easyjet experience at Malpensa, but they have now sorted it out. However, priority boarding still means you get to board the bus first, rather than the 'plane. I still prefer to drive to and from Italy/UK.

I must admit I wish there were an easy alternative to Ryanair Stanstead to Pescara, sadly there is not. Only answer I have found is Hand luggage only, check in on line, priority boarding and good ear plugs to block the announcements and continual sales pitches that come over the PA. True the fleet is very modern and the cabin staff have always been very helpful and polite, so, I will continue to complain and also still fly Ryanair.crying

I love Ryanair. You get what you pay for, and you get to where you are supposed to be on time. Thay have reduced CO2 emissions greatly by pressuring plane/engine producers to reduce fuel consumption. This is modern transport, fast, cheap efficient.   Of course, if you are used to taking a taxi, going on a crowded bus is uncomfortable, but as long as it is on schedule, it will take you where you are going efficently, at a very modest price and CO2 emission compared to the taxi.   You cannot get it both cheap and exclusive.

If only I enjoyed being treated like scum. I have NEVER found Ryanair staff to be courteous, interested or anything other than disdainful. You get what you pay for is kind of on the right track: O'Leary seems to enjoy giving the attitude that "if you fly with us, you can't be worth my time" Every year I said I wouldn't do it again; every year I did. The final straw came when my mum came over on her own, and it was only when she chatted to another passenger while folk boarded, that she found out the plane was for Warsaw, not Prestwick! When she questioned the cabin crew, she was treated like she should have known. In her seventies, the experience is trying enough without getting treated like an idiot because their ground crew can't/don't read boarding cards. Enough - KLM or BA to Fiumicino. After taxes and baggage charges (and I'm excluding the 8Kg difference - add that on!) the difference is £33, which isn't bad, oh wait - £33 CHEAPER than Ryanair!

Have to disagree with you. Fly with Ryanair normally 20 times a year...for last 5 years...Have never been treated badly and as others say good value...normally no more than £50 return often less...no one else can compete with their prices when you book on-line and in advance.     Ryanair is good and should not be given hard time so dont use and dont moan if not happy with service.

I've no complaints re Ryanair, but I use it all the time and see it as a matter of honour to beat them at their own game (baggage being a continual game of catch-up).  And its the only service to my nearest airports I can see that those who nneed more help might find it lets them down.  But I agree with the overall premise that you get what you pay for and that should always be borne in mind when booking.

Many of us would not have had homes in Italy if we hadnt been able to access them cheaply and easily via Ryanair. I have no complaints with their service or staff, last time I flew with them the steward went out of his way to be helpful and the service equalled the more expensive carriers.

Not my favourite airline but considering what the staff have to put up with they are a pleasant lot. Swissair ex Birmingam might be worth a try but takes longer however you can have a hold bag! Object to R-air polishing off the opposition then running things their way.

In case you weren't already aware, Ryanair now have a large digital scale and a handy credit card swiper located at the gate. (This was at Ancona this weekend). All hand luggage was weighed before they would check you boarding card and fees applied if your hand luggage was over weight. Obviously the priority boarders got to have their hand luggage weigthed first!!

I'm going with Ryanair out of Stansted next week & I bet there will be some scales ready for all us passengers! I'm only taking hand luggage but will now make sure I'm under rather than spot on!smiley

A beautiful woman walks in and sits down at the table next to a man. He decides because she's got a uniform on, she's probably an off-duty flight attendant. So he decides to have a go at picking her up by identifying the airline she flies for, thereby impressing her greatly. He leans across to her and says the Delta Airlines motto 'We love to fly and it shows'. The woman looks at him blankly. He sits back and thinks up another line. He leans forward again and delivers the Air France motto 'Winning the hearts of the world'. Again she just stares at him with a slightly puzzled look on her face. Undeterred, he tries again, this time saying the Malaysian Airlines motto: 'Going beyond expectations' . The woman looks at him sternly and says 'What the **** do you want?' 'Ah!' he says, sitting back with a smile on his face.  Ryanair cheeky

I know Ryanair are cheap and cheerful, but untill last year it was a cheap and cheerful and very convenient bus from Stansted to Palermo. We used this route dozens of times over the previous 2 yrs. Then they dropped without warning, the Palermo destination in favour of Trapani, which is much further west, very inconvenient for anyone with property along the northern coast of Sicily, Ie palermo, Trabia, Caccamo, Cefalu etc. So now although we travel an extra 20 mins Uk end to gatwick, we get easyjet direct to Palermo. I reccomend any one that used the old route to do the same and Drop Ryanair like they dropped us. Hopefully someone will take up the route again from stansted as it was always full and must have made money.

Just been looking at flights for the summer and see that under the taxes to be paid bit, there is a new charge of what looks like £2 per person per flight for a cancel / delay levy?  I had not heard anything about it but will add another £16 to my summer tickets!  I love Ryanair but now getting frustrated by the continued new ways of getting a few bob!

Yes it is true, unlike this (check the release date!) http://www.ryanair.com/en/news/child-free-flights-from-october-2011 The £2 levy per passenger is in effect their insurance  to cover losses incurred by R'air when having to pay compensation under the EU directive for delayed or cancelled flights, in which they had no control, apparently they often paid more in compensation than were receiving in fares! It took effect from 4th April. http://www.ryanair.com/en/news/ryanair-to-introduce-eu261-compensation-levy-of-2-euro At least they have not introduced fuel surcharges, yet, unlike BA et al!
