We have a house in the countryside in Sardinia. We have a TIM chiavetta for mobile broadband but there is no reception using this at the house for internet. (My TIM mobile phone does have reception however.) I don't actually want a landline but I do want an internet connection. I think the only solution is to get a landline and then an ADSL connection. So, two questions -1) is this correct that my only solution is a landline plus ADSL?2) if the house is in the countryside and I see no indication of phone lines at any nearby houses, will a landline cost a fortune to install, if I can get one at all? Thanks.

have you made enquiries with other people in your area to see if they have a chiavetta with another provider? you could also go to a local shop that sells them in the area, they should know which providers have good reception in your area. having a landline doesn't guarantee broadband access a long distance from an exchange, you'd have to ask the landline provider if this is so. hope this helps.

Alexcal gives good advice on 'chiavetta' coverage, and if TIM isn't good for you then maybe 3 or Wind or Vod could be. Ask a neighbour. However, your options might include a non land-line based service for decent broadand access without using a mobile network. I'm completely in the dark about Sardegna, but it's possible that www.ariadsl.it or www.technoadsl.it will offer you the option of putting in your address and sending round a rep to see if you have 'line of sight' to one of their wide area wifi (microwave based, I believe) networks. These can be quite economical for full time residents - about €20 per month, and you don't have to pay the TI canone. I doubt that you could receive www.fastweb.it - but you never know. Alternatively (because I only know about mainland central Italy) why not try a search on www.google.it using search terms adsl and sardegna.

Hi, we have a house in Piedmonte. We are also in a very rural area. The nearest phone line was about 1km away. We made inquiries and got a quote of around 6000 Euros for a land line. I don't know if Elsynet is available in Sardinia but it's not too bad. It's not the fastest broadband you can't stream films for instance. But normal e-mail and search engines are quick enough and you can get a faster/bigger capacity commercial user package. It costs 20 Euros a month and you get a landline phone number. The calls are also reasonable. I can't remember how much but I am sure the cost will be on their site (www.elsynet.it). Installation cost was 300 Euros. You have a small dish type antenna put on the house. It's about 300mm square, and obviously a cable to the phone and internet point. This needs to be near a power point to power up the system. The only problem we have had is the antenna failed after about 1 year but they came and replaced it free of charge.
