The whole area is beautifulSubmitted by Tartuffa on Sat, 02/18/2012 - 04:21
The whole area is beautiful but C di S itself may be a bit of a disappointment as it was badly bombed in the war. A couple of nice churches though! The roads are clear but there are tons of snow piled up roadside still to be shifted - not a pretty site and it does make it hard to get around as a pedestrian. I think all the resorts are doing well and all pistes operational. Don't forget to check out Pescocostanzo too - it is delightful. The most extensive network of pistes is at Roccaraso although many of the smaller stations are now joined into it via a lift or two. If the weather isn't perfect then come and have a look around our lovely Sulmona! You may not read this until you get back Charlotte but I didn't want you to think that no one cared enough to answer you. You gave me some good advice when I needed it 2 years ago. Thank you.

Thank you for your comments yes I have just read them now I am back! I have never seen snow piled so high! The skiing at Roccaraso was great, just as good as going to the Dolomites for me, cheaper and nearer Rome! Very popular, great atmosphere especially with lots of kids skiing in fancy dress on Shrove Tuesday. Fabulous scenery and views. Castel di Sangro was disappointing, a miserable town I thought, but we were staying just outside in a full-on ski hotel so we hardly explored it, just happy to stay in the warm and the kids loved the animazione and we loved the three course dinners. Next time I would go for Pescocostanza though, that is a charming little town. The area is completely spectacular, and on the way back to Rome we went via Lago di Barrea, completely frozen over, took hundreds of pics of it. Charlotte
