Ancona airport..

There have been some rumours of a possible downgrading of Ancona airport to a freight only scalo. Finally national government is trying to bring an end to the era of "an airport in every town" in which minor areas and comunities all wanted to have their own airports and old military installations were being converted into civil airports regardless of whether they were really necessary/useful and more importantly financially viable .Whether or not this rumoured closure of Ancona for civil flights is anyone's guess however i would not be over worried by such a prospective given that there are to date at least 7 international airports within 4 hours of southern marche. What is more important is that airports eventually designated to remain become up graded with improved flying, logistics and services and a more entreprenurial stance providing more and better destinations. As far as the Marche's tourism is concerned the regional government should have done something earlier on rather than the continue with the tax payers bearing absurd costs of the ancona airport authority, having a ryan air flight does not in itself consititute a success ,and visitors to this area can go and come just as easily from Pescara,Perugia,Roma,Bologna,Forlì,Rimini etc.Anyway we'll see what happens as just as easily nothing may happen. There are lots of other far more pressing issues relative to tourism to sort out in this region before worrying about the airport...

Drivers travelling down the Ascoli Mare superstrada direction San Benedetto del Tronto will probably have noted the helicopter factory / service company about 3 kms from the end of the superstrada. You may also note that the company is expanding to create a runway for aircraft as well as the usual area for 'copters to land. Users of the cycleway/walkway running parallel to the river will be able to confirm this construction by reading the sign showing the future project etc. Local discussions have illustrated that this new works will in fact be a small airport servicing San Benedetto del Tronto and area, and is being built to the capacity of aircraft used by RyanAir etc. This company is; in fact; mentioned in the planning documents. Fingers crossed therefore that this will become an airport similar in size to Ancona or Pescara. Handy for us as we live only a few kms. away...

This rumour has been much discussed within other groups, and whilst I can see Sebastianos point it is still presenting a worry to the holiday letting community in Marche. The latest is that it is being debated at comune level, no doubt a trickle down consultation excersise. However as it appears that Ancona has made a profit this year so may be spared the chop, especially after all its recent upgrading. The only thing to do is keep an eye on the press and the TV news. But I would be grateful if others could share any concrete information that they may have.
