I was searching the local bookshop for an English/Italian dictionary for my 6 year old last week when I came across"1351 Parole inglesi per picoli e grandi"  Joseph P. Orwell published by Dami Editore 6.90 EuroGreat little book with the English words listed in alphabetical order.  Each word is  accompanied by a picture and its Italian translation.  They say that an average Italian knows about 7000 words.  When I have mastered this book I would have made a lot of progress!  I wish I had this book when I did not know a word of Italian and was travelling around Italy.  By just showing the picture and trying to say the Italian word would have made life easier and more fun!  My daughter and I are learning this book together: she learns the English word and I the Italian equivalent.  What a fun way to learn Italian and English!  I shall be looking for the French/Italian version.  I also hope they bring out a second version "more 1351 parole" !

You could maybe have a look at "Il tuo primo libro per imparare l'inglese" published by Larus; ISBN88-7747-563-3 that I bought for my new Italian 'speakeressa' aged 49 years young. Well illustrated and very simple, in a format of Q & A that at the top of the page asks you - in Italian - a question, and below you choose the answer from a page of 4 or so pictures accompanied with the Italian word. Divided into sections e.g. food; garden; house / home; kitchen; it can be used to prompt word search, or even costs so little that it could be cut up and the pictures / words distributed around the various rooms etc to act as 'Post-it' style prompts. As an (ex) teacher (you're never an ex-teacher) I found this book a really excellent resource.Andrew

I've been studying Italian for about 20 months and try to practice whenever I can.  When my 6 year old nephew first heard me say a few phrases he was fascinated (he's had a few Spanish lessons in school and loved  them).  Now it's 'how do you say this in Italian? How do you say that in Italian?' all the time  We're going on a family holiday together soon and I've been thinking about buying a book suitable for his age.  I'd like to teach him a few words/phrases and this looks ideal as I particularly wanted an illustrated book.  I think he'd find it lots of fun and no doubt I'll pick up a few new words too.  Thanks for the recommendation Alan!Colette
