An event not to be missed. The 2nd National Exhibition and Fair for "Presepi" or Nativity sets, is going to be held in Bagni di Lucca as from the 4th of December at the Piazza Circolo dei Forestieri. A traditional event at Christmas time, it started as a local show only because Bagni di Lucca is famous for its Nativity sets; however, they expanded it last year to incorporate pieces coming from other regions in Italy. You can also purchase your own Nativity set. Here is all the information: http://www.saimicadove.it/tempolibero/evento.asp?Id=31306 Enjoy!

We went last year and the Fair was very good with exhibits from all over Italy, and a nice Christmas Fair outside, with local artisans showing their Christmas products. Samples of the food were good as well. But if you want REAL "Presepi" excellence a trip to Napoli is a must...

I have to agree with you, Flip, as in Naples the presepi are a true art form rather than a craft. The ones at Bagni are very beautiful, but they are plaster figurines made by using moulds, although they are hand painted one by one. In Spain, we have a magnificent XVIII Century presepio from Naples brought to the Madrid Royal Palace by King Charles III who was also King of Naples. It is considered a masterpiece and it is on display around Christmas. http://www.elpais.com/articulo/cultura/Palacio/Real/acoge/belen/napolitano/135/figuras/elpepucul/20021204elpepucul_1/Tes
