Political fireworks in Milan and Naples

05/30/2011 - 12:05

The second running of the local elections here in Italy happened yesterday and today, (they do this because of some form of PR, so that if at the first elections, last weekend, nobody reaches 50% they have to do it again). Anyway, in two most important cities the mayors, who were in Berlusconi's camp, have been defeated by centre left candidates. A chap called Giuliano Pisapia has won in Milan - and the loss of this city, (being the home of Berlusconi's business empire) has upset Silvio's applecart. Berlusconi had (rather foolishly, it turns out) claimed that if Milan fell it would  show a lack of confidence in himself as leader of the party and the nation. That was one of the printable comments he made on Sig Pisapia. Naples will now be run by the centre left as well, under a man called Luigi di Magistris.
