There are insurance rates for very small engined scooters, or ones governed to a certain performance level, which are set much lower, I believe. But once you are onto a scooter which doesn't fall into the 'my first scooter' category it does get pricey. www.6sicuro.it is a good insurance comparison site - I expect it also covers scooters (but I'm not certain).

The rates in Italy are higher then UK for several reasons. Firstly Italian drives (in my opinion) are less competent than the UK;statistically you are more likely to have an accident here than the UK; the Insurance is on the vehicle not the driver; less stringent vehicle testing and lots of poorly maintained vehicles on the road; oh and higher road speeds (though if you get behind an octogenarian in a Panda you wont think so) So not a rip off just a different set of goal posts, you do not have like for like insurance in these Countries.

Likewise House insurance in Italy generally has a higher risk attached to it for numerous reasons i.e. age of buildings, Earthquakes, Frana, flooding, poor maintenance, etc etc. also what area you live in also greatly affects it. We have found that House Insurance is very reasonable so it pays top shop around try a UK company that covers overseas property. If you think that prices in Italy are 'Rip Off' then why oh why bother to buy/move here ??

When I looked at buying a car on Italian plates, I was quoted about 3 times the UK insurance cost too. But what got me was that if I swerved to avoid the lunatic hurtling towards me and hit the wall instead of hitting him head-on, the insurance wouldn't cover it. The agent told me that if I was going to have an accident, I must always be sure to hit the other car, otherwise they wouldn't pay out. That was Allianz, not just some back-street outfit. Don't you just love it! TK

Why do you stay here then? Why do you spend time on a website, supposedly for lovers of Italy, complaining, moaning and whinging about Italy? Are Australians correct when they say that Poms are just a bunch of complaining whingers?  As the "Urban Directory" starts its item about "Whinging Poms" says:  "A person of British origin who will consistently complain about any situation that they may face. They are emotionally unable to deal with any sort of adverse condition without commenting negatively about it. " Just go home. Buy yourself a sunbed and be happy.

I sorted mine by keeping a car on UK plates, insured with Saga, who allow all-year European cover. The car has now done over 3 years so I have to get it back to UK for MoT but that's no real problem. If I get fed up with that I'll sell it and get a new one every 3 years.
