Liguria in the Fall: Grape Harvest Time

Autumn is the ideal time of year to visit Liguria: generally, the weather is still nice, the landscape is colored with a mood-lifting mix of warm hues, and the crowds have dispersed. Liguria in the fall makes for a relaxing and romantic getaway.
Plus, it’s grape harvest time and you can experience this centuries-old ritual firsthand by visiting some of the vineyards scattered throughout the region and sampling the new wines directly from the producers. Liguria is one of the smallest Italian wine regions, but produces as many as eight DOC wines (meaning controlled production methods and guaranteed wine quality) across the whole territory.
Cinque Terre DOC is perhaps the most famous Ligurian wine, produced on the cliffside vineyards that dot the hills just behind the five villages of the Cinque Terre. Made from Bosco, Albarola and Vermentino grape varieties, this DOC produces light white wines; the passito and liquoroso versions produce the famous Sciacchetrà.
The western portion of Liguria is the Dolceacqua region producing red wine from the indigenous Rossese grape, which thrives at altitudes of up to 1600ft, in the Imperia province, at the western edge of the Italian Riviera. This variety creates fruity and spicy wines.

La Liguria è una delle regioni vinicole più piccole d’Italia, ma produce ben otto vini DOC (metodi di produzione controllata e qualità del vino garantita), che coprono tutto il territorio.
Forse il più famoso vino ligure è la DOC Cinque Terre, prodotta nei vigneti ricavati dalle colline appena dietro i cinque borghi delle Cinque Terre; ottenuta da uve Bosco, Albarola e Vermentino, questa DOC produce vini bianchi leggeri; le versioni passito e liquoroso producono il famoso Sciacchetrà.
La parte occidentale della Liguria comprende la regione vinicola Dolceacqua, dove prevale la produzione di vino rosso da uve autoctone Rossese, che prosperano ad altitudini fino a 500 metri; siamo nella provincia di Imperia, al margine occidentale della costa ligure. Questa varietà crea vini fruttati e speziati.
