Southern politician killed while voting in Left's primary elections

(ANSA) - Reggio Calabria, October 16 - A southern politician was shot dead by two men on Sunday as he voted in he centre-left primary elections organised by the centre-left opposition, police in Locri said.

Francesco Fortugno, Deputy Chief of the Calabria regional council, was gunned down by two men and died shortly after arriving at a hospital in the southern city.

The 54-year-old politician was a member of the opposition centrist Margherita party.

Police said they were following a number of leads, including the possibility of a Mafia vendetta slaying.
