Burn waste in Vesuvius

'Burn waste in Vesuvius'The safer chunks of the Naples waste mountain could be thrown into the flames of Vesuvius, two Tuscan politicians suggested Monday.

''A commission of experts could assess the feasibility of disposing of tonnes of waste in the jaws of Vesuvius, as long as it's not the plastic that releases dioxins,'' Francesco Berti and Paolo Venturi of the Florence Socialist Party said.

Berti and Venturi admitted their idea was ''provocative'' but said it would be a good way of solving the problem of shipping garbage to sites around Italy.

As the army continues to shovel waste off the streets of Naples and the surrounding Campania region, the first shipments of rubbish have been arriving at disposal sites in the handful of other regions which have agreed to take them.

Moving the trash out of Campania has met with resistance - especially in Sardinia where protesters tried to burn down the regional governor's residence.

For now, Italy's only functioning incinerators are outside Campania - and much of the Campania waste is unsuitable for disposal in such plants because it has not been sorted into different types.
