The church bell iPhone app

It had to happen: an Italian company has launched an iPhone application which will allow parish priests to activate their church bells from wherever they are.

Bell restorers Luca and Giacomo Rubagotti, with their computer expert friend Giorgio Campiotti, developed the application in their home town of Chiari [near Brescia] Lombardy, reports the BBC.

Luca and Giacomo, who learnt their trade from their father, Carlo, say that there are now fewer priests in Italy than ever before so one priest may have to look after several parishes. Therefore the application, which has hundreds of bell tunes and combinations and which can be programmed a year in advance, is an ideal tool for busy priests.

Over 50 priests in Northern Italy have begun using the application and are said to be very enthusiastic about it. Luca, Giacomo and Giorgio are convinced that their invention will preserve the sound of church bells in Italy and now they are hoping to launch the product internationally.
