Best Italian Restaurant Abroad

The Michelin Guide 2012 has awarded three stars to Umberto Bombana’s Hong Kong-based Otto e Mezzo. It is the first restaurant outside of Italy to be awarded with such an exceptional grading.

One of the most notable ingredients, a testament to the chef's absolute focus on fine ingredients, are the top-of-the-line white truffles. The menu includes a lobster and mozzarella ‘salad’ with a prized Belon oyster delicately submerged in Bellini and homemade tagliatelle with intense pork ragu (made with pata negra) and wild fennel.

The chef-owner, who previously headed the kitchen at the Hotel Ritz Carlton in Tuscany, has also previously worked abroad in Los Angeles. Critics have described his culinary creations as “scented postcards of the bel paese”.

"It's a dream come true," said Bombana, an 18-year veteran of Hong Kong.
