Agostini has mixed feelings on Kawasaki withdrawal

Italian motorcycling great Giacomo Agostini said on Friday that while he was sorry Kawasaki has quit MotoGP, a little downsizing of the sport may be beneficial in view of the current economic crisis.

''The time has come for everyone to start cutting costs. It is my hope that things will work out, that this (Kawasaki) episode will not be repeated and that the sky will clear after the storm has passed''.

Kawasaki officially announced on Friday it was quiting Grand Prix racing due to economic factors.

The 66-year-old Italian champion, who holds a record eight world titles in motorcycling's premier class, said the withdrawal of an important team like Kawasaki should serve as an eye-opener.

''I hope this crisis passes quickly but I also believe a little downsizing wouldn't do any harm. It had gotten to the point where teams showed up for a race with their own restaurant, complete with chefs and waiters'', he said.

''I think costs like these could easily be eliminated without anyone going hungry. Back in my day we didn't have any of these luxuries,'' Agostini added.

In his long career, Agostini raced both 350cc and 500cc bikes, often in the same season, and collected a record total of 122 Grand Prix victories, 15 world titles and 159 pole positions.

Most of his titles were with the Italian bike MV Agusta, although he also won two championships with the Yamaha team.
