Experimental Beach Smoking Ban in Bibione

The municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento has approved a trial run to test out the possibility of banning or limiting smoking on some Italian beaches.

Local official Gianni Carrer believes that the mile-long section of ‘No Smoking’ sand is one of the first of its kind in Europe. There are some reports of a French beach attempting a similar project.

The smoking restriction, which carries no penalties for offenders, is part of a larger initiative to become a zero-emission city.

Smiling posters in Bibione will announce the initiative and invite beachgoers to collaborate on the project by sharing their impressions.

Last summer, an area in Marina di Camerota was declared off limits to smokers, but took place on a private section of beach. The proposed smoke-free area Bibione is on public land and organizers are unsure how the measure will be met by the public.
