In a large coordinated sweep, Italian police have broken up an extensive network of tomb raiders that has been looting archaeological sites in central and southern Italy.

Officers conducted searches in 21 localities, including major cities such as Rome and Naples. 50 separate sting operations led to the recovery of medallions, coins, statues and other artifacts.

In many cases, these items were obtained using excavation methods that caused serious damage to fragile ancient sites.

47 people are now facing charges of receiving stolen property and illegally obtaining property belonging to the state.

Police seized 2,298 items, which will be returned to government archives.
