There is a general rule for plural and singular nouns in Italian:
- masculine singular nouns end in -o
- masculine plural nouns end in -i
- feminine singular nouns end in -a
- feminine plural nouns end in -e
But there are always exceptions to the rule!
For example, the word for an egg (that we eat) is masculine in the singular and feminine in the plural
- uovo (masculine singular)
- uova (feminine plural)
An example sentence would be:
L’uovo è buono - The egg is nice
Le uova sono buone - The eggs are nice
So for breakfast, you could order:
uovo sodo - boiled egg
uova strapazzate - scrambled eggs
uovo all’occhio di bue - fried egg
And for Easter you may look forward to a nice:
uovo di Pasqua - Easter egg
or
uovo di cioccolato - chocolate egg
