The Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva (The Living Museum of the Sea) is slated to open tomorrow in Palermo.

The museum will be promoting a series of coastal itineraries around the city, to highlight the important relationship between Palermo and the sea, its history and memories.

This open-air museum includes three main locations: the tonnara (a place for tuna fishing activities)  of the Virgin Mary, the arsenal of the Royal Navy (Arsenale della Regia Marina), and the former Locomotive Depot of St. Erasmus (Ex-Deposito Locomotive di S. Erasmo).

Some of the villages, beaches and stretches of coastline featured as part of the project are Capo Gallo, Sferracavallo, Capo Zafferano, Collesano, Lascari and the wonderful town of Cefalù, towards the east. Not to be missed  Mondello, a white sandy beach 1.5 km long, much frequented by the locals, and l’Isola delle Femmine (Island of the Females), an ancient fishing village.
