Lamborghini’s most successful model, the Gallardo, is retiring.

Named after a breed of fighting bull, the Lamborghini Gallardo was first introduced in 2003 to mark Lamborghini’s 40th anniversary; in the ten years since, 14,022 Gallardos were made, almost matching the total number of all other Lamborghini cars built since the company, based in Sant’Agata Bolognese near Bologna, was founded in 1963. The Gallardo in fact created such demand that production was boosted from about 250 units a year to 2,000.

The last Gallardo was made on November 25; it was one of 32 special editions, the LP 570-4 Spyder Performante - it has already been bought by a collector.

In December 2004, two L140 Gallardos, complete with flashing blue lights and blue paintwork, were donated to the Italian police to honor the force's 152nd anniversary.

A replacement for the Gallardo is scheduled to arrive in the second half of next year.
