My question is addressed to anyone with a knowledge of the Italian immigration system.

I recently obtained Italian citizenship through my mother. I will be moving to Italy at the beginning of 2021. I am concerned about leaving my retired 70 year-old father, who is not Italian, in the US. There will be no one to look after him as he ages. Does anyone have any knowledge regarding the rules for 'family reunification' in Italy? Once I am settled I would like to apply to have him join me as a resident in Italy. I am able to pay for private medical insurance so that he would not be a burden on the public system.

I attempted to research this question on the 'net but could not find any information about a sponsoring a parent only a minor child.

Thank you for any assistance you might provide.

He could apply for a permesso di soggiorno on 'ricongiungimento familiare'.    If he has the means and does not intend to work (why would he at 70?)  he could also apply for residenza eletttiva.  Either way, he will need to go through the permesso di soggiorno process every year until he can claim long term residence.
