Scenic Drive Firenze/Verona...and back to Firenze

Everyone here has been so helpful with my driving dilemma...thank you.Now planning the drive from Firenze to Verona area, then from Verona back down to Firenze, perhaps down through Collodi area. Car rental is from Wednesday morning until Friday evening...so two nights/three days.We need to go up the S65, as far as Futa Pass to visit a cemetary. This is really the main reason for the car rental. After 60 years we have finally found my grandfather's grave marker. Then would like to bypass Bologna (we'll see Bologna on a day trip or two by rail from Firenze) and swing west somehow, then up to Verona. Our goal is to stay off the main roads and take the less busy roads where we can stop wherever the urge hits up. We'll stay in or close to Verona for one night. Then back down, somehow, to Firenze...again staying off main roads and winding our way back to Firenze and our apartment. Lucca will also be a day trip by bus from Firenze. We want to get a feel for the this beautiful country and take advantage of being out of Firenze whenever we can...off the normal tourist track, enjoying the food, the views, the people.Does anyone have any thoughts on a route for us?

If you want to complicate things - although in an interesting way- you can drive Firenze - Montecatini (exit) , Pescia, Collodi, then take the road that ends up in Boveglio. From there to Bagni di Lucca via Benabbio and then turn right to Abetone - Modena. From there to Verona. But it is much shorter and easier via Bologna.
